July 4, 2023 – There is something about the open road on a warm summer afternoon—especially when it is July 4th. The rumble of engines, the wind in your face, and the company of good friends makes for a perfect ride, and that is exactly what happened when I set out from Troy, Ohio, alongside my buddies Jason and Tommy.

We did not plan anything elaborate, just a solid route with some great roads and even better conversation. The goal was simple: make our way south from Troy through the scenic stretches of western Ohio, avoiding Interstate 70 and 75 at all costs, and wrapping it all up at one of our favorite stops—Rip Rap Roadhouse in Dayton, the pinnacle of biker bars in the area.

The afternoon temperatures scorched as we saddled up and rolled out. Jason, as usual, had his long beard wrapped in a beard lacer while Tommy’s long hair was secured under his helmet. Riding solo is freeing, but riding with friends like these? That is a whole different kind of therapy.

We took a route that wound us down through Tipp City and Vandalia, avoiding the fast pace of I-70 and I-75 in favor of the quieter, twistier roads that make Ohio’s countryside worth exploring. With the American flags waving from every front porch and small towns setting up for their Independence Day parades, the ride felt more meaningful. It was not just about the bikes—it was about the freedom they represented.

By the time we rolled into Dayton, the air temperature had hit nearly 95 degrees, and we were more than ready for food and a cold drink. Rip Rap Roadhouse delivered, as always. With its biker-friendly vibe, live music, and patio seating, it is the kind of place that feels like a second home to riders. We grabbed a spot outside, swapped stories, laughed way too loud, and toasted to friendship, freedom, and the roads that brought us there.

July 4, 2023, won’t be remembered for fireworks or big events. It will be remembered for three friends, a handful of shared laughs, and the beautiful, brief stretch of Ohio roads between Troy and Dayton. Sometimes, that is all you really need.
